A story of a 13 - year-old who was convinced she would never fit in a sprawling urban zones

In between the great bustle which could be heard out in the courtyard, the switching of chairs and tables, loud laughing, there stood a little girl with mind full of thoughts ranging from being scared to curiosity, looking out of school building that was amidst by green fields tall eucalyptus trees , and chirping birds. Yes it was me. I was new to the metropolitan city, transition from my childhood to adulthood was challenging in the beginning as I come from a small town. It was my first day of mid school. All dressed in that beautiful white shirt with my school logo embroidered in my pocket and a green blazer that already gave me a vibe of a businesswomen. With gray formal pants and brightly polished black shoes, I started a new chapter of my life. I was surrounded with people more confident than me. I had mind full of things to share but somehow it couldn’t roll off my tongue. I found conveying message to a teacher through my school diary was way more distressing than communicating in person. During those times, novels and diaries became my best friends. I could relate to Anne Frank more than anyone else as my story of life was no less than a war. A war between me and my inner self

However, It was a weekend and yet another competition was held at school. The basketball court was turned into a battlefield. There were many contestants, all waiting with bated breaths, for the competition to commence.

All the bases were covered except one, host? Where was the events team?

Meanwhile, me and my friends captured a spot to watch the match begin. There was an announcement from the events team that the match will be delayed by an hour. Everyone looked bewildered, the scene was total chaos because everyone was desperately waiting for the match. In the middle of the crowd, I saw my mentor and teacher pointing towards me. Initially, I thought I was mistaken, and she might be referring a girl sitting right behind me and so I called her out. Seconds later, she nodded her head, gazing towards me. She seemed quite worried and in full gallop. She was calling me, I stood up and moved to her. I had much questions on my mind and a lot to figure out. She asked me to conduct the event! Clearly, it was a fine state of affairs! I was in disbelief and mesmerised. Shiver went down my spine, she calmed me down and started filling me with circumstances, and said that the anchors who were going to command the event won’t be able to make it to the present due to some unavoidable situation. I started denying and recommending others for the purpose. She turned me down saying no one will stand by at last moment, she continued I’ve faith in you and showed lots of confidence in me.

One thing that hit me hard was when my mentor said “ You will never know if You will never try”. Deep down I had strong desire to stand out but was fearful. Time was ticking away, I had exactly fifty minutes to steel myself. I began flipping over script and started rehearsing. I spoke constantly for those fifty minutes and was ready.I was breaking out in cold sweat. Time came, I walked backstage, I could feel my hands shivering before starting, but I put a brave face on it and stepped onto the stage to begin with event. “Good morning students and teachers...” As I continued, my heart sagged but I carried forward. My each word went as right as rain and I was packed with bundle of energy. Everyone gazed in absolute astonishment as I say! After getting a round of applause, I left the stage. Everyone was very proud of myself and said you did it with flying colours. That day made a lot of difference in my life and every teachers used to recognise and appreciate me as I walk through corridors. That event opened doors for various opportunities for me. Thereafter, I got chance to be a part of famous Shakespeare’s play and was honoured with “The Thespian award” which boosted my confidence. Working with my peers on projects and presenting them became my favourite part of school. People actually started liking me and were enthusiastic for my ideas. Slowly, my actions had influence in my community. There was a great improvement in myself and I could feel the changes in me. A new powerful, outspoken and optimistic person. tongue can paint what eyes can’t see.

Everyone has their own point to say, all they need is little push and encouragement. I’m no longer a silent girl but an adult possessing self confidence and wings to flutter, power to confront the world and pave a path for my dreams.

Lastly, no one would have guessed that unassuming meek Shia Surani would have an influence on anyone
